Another fatality, through careless handling of firearms, occurred in Springfield Township yesterday.

Dennis Stofer and wife, who live three miles southwest of Ontario, were attending the funeral of his father who lived near Butler.  While the parents were away their son Clinton, who is 14 years old, got down the shotgun with the intention of going hunting.  While the boy was handling the gun one of the barrels was accidentally discharged with deadly results.

Mildred, the 9-year-old daughter, was standing near and received the entire charge in her left leg, near the thigh.  The leg was almost completely shot off.

Dr. Beal of Ontario and Dr. Bennett of Crestline were immediately summoned and they amputated the leg but human skill was unavailing.  The shock was so great that the little girl never returned to consciousness and about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, about five hours after the shooting, she died.  Her death occurred before her parents returned home and upon their return they were almost crazed by the horrible fate of their little girl.

The family is in a destitute circumstance but the people of that locality are doing all in their power to comfort and console the grief-stricken parents and children.
